Overview
The Shira Route is one of the lesser-used western approaches to Mount Kilimanjaro. It is very similar to the Lemosho Route, but it starts much higher up at Shira Gate (3,600m), after a drive across the Shira Plateau. Because of its high starting point, acclimatization can be more challenging, but the route offers beautiful views and fewer crowds.
Although Shira is a varied and beautiful route, it is less favorable than its successor due to the relatively high altitude of Shira’s starting point, which is accessed quickly by vehicle. It is possible that climbers will experience some altitude related symptoms on the first day while camping at 11,800 feet.
Highlights
- Unique Western Approach – Starts from Shira Gate (3,600m) on the Shira Plateau, one of the oldest parts of Kilimanjaro’s volcanic landscape.
- Scenic Shira Plateau – Cross vast plains of wildflowers, volcanic rock formations, and panoramic views of Kibo and Mount Meru.
- Remote & Less Crowded – Fewer climbers compared to popular routes like Machame or Marangu, offering a quieter trekking experience.
- Varied Landscapes – Pass through rainforest, moorland, alpine desert, and finally the arctic summit zone.
- Climb High, Sleep Low – The ascent to Lava Tower (4,600m) and descent to Barranco Camp aids acclimatization.
- Great for Experienced Trekkers – High starting altitude makes it better suited for trekkers with prior acclimatization or high-altitude trekking experience.
